The Green Thumbs are a friendly group of volunteers who assist with the management of the TWPS garden in collaboration with TWPS teachers, staff and students.
The Green Thumbs help to plan seasonal crops for the garden and provide seeds for planting. Fruit trees, herbs, a variety of seasonal vegetables and colourful flowers all grow abundantly in the garden, and students and teachers enjoy planting seedlings at the start of each season.
Volunteer opportunities include:
Garden Club: Lunch time engagement of students and general maintenance of the school garden. Students assist with weeding, watering, planting seeds, and learning about the garden in a fun and relaxed way. Kids love seeing their parents and younger siblings in the garden. Read more about Garden Club in the "FAQ" section at the bottom of this page.
Working Bees: One weekend day per term. These are fun family events aimed at improving and maintaining the school garden ahead of each planting season. Typically, around 5-10 families attend. We would love more!
Behind the scenes activities: Planning, grant-writing, social media, purchasing equipment, and networking with Council and sponsor organisations.
We are an inclusive group and would very much welcome any new volunteers to help with our different activities and to follow our journey. You don’t need to have a “green thumb” to join in the fun, as we have plenty of knowledgeable volunteers who can show you the ropes.
Q: What is garden club?
Garden Club offers TWPS students the opportunity to get their hands dirty in the school garden, under the guidance of parent volunteers.
Q: What time can my children attend Garden Club?
Garden club is held at lunch on Mondays and Fridays, 1:30-2:15pm.
Q: Where is Garden Club held?
We meet in the school garden, which is located between the school oval and the TWOOSH building.
Q: What happens at Garden Club?
Students help weed, water, harvest fruit and vegetables, plant seeds and seedlings, and dig for worms.
Q: Can younger siblings come?
Yes! Garden Club is one of the few volunteer opportunities at TWPS that allows you to bring toddlers and pre-schoolers along, and they LOVE being involved!
Q: I don't know much about gardening, is that ok?
Absolutely. A number of our regular parent gardeners are self-confessed "Black Thumbs". Luckily many of the students are gardening gurus and full of great suggestions. You can also buddy up with a more experienced parent gardener, so email greenthumbs@twpspandc.org if you'd like to get involved.
